Irukanji Research

An unprecedented invasion of the tiny irukandji, which can pass through the stinger-resistant enclosures, has become a health issue for North Queensland. The Dr Edward Koch Foundation has provided financial support for research headed by Dr James Seymour, James Cook University, the aim of which has been to identify which jellyfish are responsible for irukandji syndrome, how to minimise the risk of exposure, how to identify those at risk for the severe form of the syndrome, and how best to treat those affected. Another focus has been to determine when high-risk periods for Irukandji may occur.

The principal aim of the web site is to provide educational and scientific information about life cycles, different species and their identification, where and when they occur, and why and how box jellyfish sting.
