Life Bereavement Support Service
Life bereavement support is available to people who have lost someone they care for through suicide and other sudden, unexpected death. This counseling service is available to bereaved people, initially through a phone contact and also as a face-to-face service with trained counselors on call.
The Foundation is committed to the promotion of life and the prevention of suicide. Through its Life Program, the Foundation continues to support initiatives that deliver positive outcomes that improve and benefit the region in the areas of suicide prevention and postvention.
Life Bereavement Support Crisis Line: 0439722266
If you know someone who may benefit from this service, please pass on the information to them. The crisis line is attended 9.30am-4.30pm Monday to Friday with messages and missed calls outside of these times followed up on the next working day. No cost is asked for this service, although donations to the Dr Edward Koch Foundation to help keep this service operating are always most welcome.
A memorandum of understanding exists between the Queensland Police Service and the Dr Edward Koch Foundation in response to a sudden death. Police personnel are invariably the first responders to suicide, fatal traffic, workplace and recreational accidents, homicides, child deaths and sudden death by natural causes. The aim of the MOU is for attending police officers to offer those bereaved a connection with the Life Bereavement Support Service.

Executive Office Dulcie Bird of the Dr Edward Koch Foundation signing the Memorandum of Understanding with Andrew Henderson, Assistant Commissioner, Far Northern Region, Queensland Police Service in 2009. The MOU establishes a cooperative framework and guidelines for working together in the support of persons bereaved through suicide and other sudden unexpected death. The program is an important service currently not provided at a state level.
