Every Monday evening, a group of enthusiastic dancers gather to improve their skills in the healthy and glamorous sport of ballroom dancing. The action takes place in the purpose-built ballroom of Dulcie Bird, the Executive Officer of the Foundation, where couples twirl and pulsate to the music of the waltz, the rumba, and other dance disciplines. Dulcie has long been a dancer and sought to incorporate her passion into the activities of the Foundation. The initiative, called Simply Ballroom, is a fundraising activity, where five volunteer teachers impart their skills to the dancers, who can be absolute beginners or more accomplished dancers who wish to improve their techniques.
Three styles of dance are taught - standard, new vogue and latin. Standard encompasses the more traditional dances of waltz, Vienna waltz, foxtrot, quickstep and tango, while the Latin section teaches cha-cha, rumba, samba, jive and paso doble. New Vogue is an Australian style of sequence dancing. Classes at Simply Ballroom are limited to 30 to ensure the best teaching conditions.
